George Shearing Residency (2015 – 2017)
Since February 2015 I have been facilitating after school and holiday art workshops at George Shearing Youth Centre in Clapham. George Shearing is a centre for young people aged 13 to 25 with special education needs and I wanted to insure my workshops responded to the wide range of interests and abilities at the centre. I started off by collecting images of the people and things that are important to the young people at the centre and then projecting them onto sheets of cotton. I then invited the young people to trace over the projected images to create large collaborative art works.
One week we created our own version of the world using collage. I provided lots of images and magazines along with a large canvas to fill. This workshop lasted two hours but the group were able to finish with time spare to talk critically about the world we currently inhabit.
